HIV/AIDS – setting the scene
Here are the guiding questions, clips and questions I used to set the scene so students will really want to know What IS HIV and AIDS? How’s it caused? How do you catch it? Can it be prevented or cured? And of course, What is my risk?
Most of this lesson was done with students gathered around the projection screen, with their journals. I moved through the questions and clips fairly quickly, making sure to have students talk more than me.
1. “What do you already know about HIV and AIDS?” Talk to a friend (or they could write it down.)
2. Showed first 4 minutes of the excellent, short documentary by Medcins Sans Frontieres “HIV – See What We See”
3. Asked ‘What did you think about that?’ and “What did you learn from this about HIV/AIDS?’ I don’t give much away, and I try not to repeat what students said, so they have to listen to each other. Follow up questions were ‘What could be causing this? Why might HIV/AIDS be more of a problem in the DCR (The Cong) and in Lesthoto than here?
4.Students wrote out the terms: HIV (Human Immuno-deficiency Virus), AIDS (Aquired Immuno-Deficiency Syndrome) and ART (Anti-Retroviral Treatment).
5. Showed “Faces of HIV” trailer from We Make the Change, featuring American adults from a whole range of backgrounds.
6. Asked “What else did you learn about HIV?” and “What big question do you have about HIV/AIDS?” They record and share out questions but I don’t answer, just praise particularly insightful questions and they are primed to learn the information in the first part of the presentation.
