Newton’s Apple Lab – Better this time.
Photos and the tweaked student sheet to show what made the difference. In case you are wondering, here’s the post from the first time through. Do this, not that.
It’s in clarity and timing mostly. Clearer objective, clearer directions because confusion -> chaos. Checking they understood what to do by requiring a data table. Keeping the lab time relatively short. Down time for 8th graders -> more chaos. But not too rushed. Stress and confusion makes everyone frustrated and damages student/teacher relationships.
Objective: to teach the difference between weight and mass by applying Newtons’ 2nd Law: Force = Mass x Acceleration due to gravity. Timing: Day ahead get your materials, organize equipment and furniture for easy flow. Day of: Introduce, demo, do. Day after: Discuss, write up.
