Grow Food Project: Planning and Planting

September 20, 2010 at 3:50 PM Leave a comment

After being inspired by our beautiful school garden run by Mrs.Mizes, the world’s best gardener (a former parent volunteer!)…

….students feverishly looked through seed catalogues, those well-know best-sellers, to figure out what they would grow from Sept to December’s Winter Harvest Feast.

Mostly leafy greens - no fruits and seeds for this season... Bok choy and stir fry, mmmm.

We learned about project management – see last couple of blogs – and then modeled what they would be doing with their seeds at home – preparing the ground and watering, planting seeds in little six-pack containers or egg cartons, watering and labeling.

A bit of a crazy mess, not helped by forgetting we were gardening and wearing these:

sensible shoes.... not.

So now, hopefully, they know EXACTLY what to do and can go home and get their gardening projects planned for their exact location with their specific seeds.  We are using log books right from the start this year, so it’s a smooth and obvious transition to the Take Action Project later in the year.
