Sticky Facts to Act On!
About 50% of the stomach contents of whales is plastic debris :-(. I heard this from a class mate on the Plastic Debris class at the Exploratorium. I checked it through the Marine Mammal Center website. Found this article that suggests plastic debris probably caused the deaths of 2 sperm whales, but not verifying the 50% statement.)
25% of perfectly good food is wasted each year in the US. (US waste more food than offshore drilling in this week’s New Scientist)
Those are two sticky facts that I want to act on. I’m really appalled, I’m really curious, and both suggest solutions that I can personally do something about.
Before I get going though, I want to figure out
- Is it true? (Couldn’t help it, already started on that one.)
- Why/what/who is causing the problem?
- What can I do about it personally? And what can we do re. policy etc.? (see my other blog Try this 1 Thing if you’re interested.)
So I’m thinking to get kids energized too, by looking for shocking facts in the news for a while ahead of starting the take action project.
We can seed some of it by having science and news periodicals delivered to the classroom (thanks to our great parents club who are funding this). Because, really, a shocking fact like these, or whatever it is that really catches your eye, is an entree into the whole, interconnected world of environment, social justice and health problems of the world.
What are some shocking facts YOU’D like to act on? Let’s start collecting them and start the ball rolling with a growing flurry of chart strips around the room until it’s too much for us all, we’ll have to Take Action!
